As West Bengal awaits the results of the 2026 Assembly elections, exit polls have painted a mixed yet closely contested picture between the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and the ruling Trinamool Congress (TMC).

Exit Poll Projections Vary Across Agencies

According to Praja Polls, the BJP could deliver a strong performance, with projections suggesting the party may secure between 178 and 210 seats — potentially enough to form the government comfortably.

Matrize, however, has offered a more balanced outlook. Its estimates place the BJP in the range of 146 to 161 seats, while the TMC is projected to win between 125 and 140 seats, indicating a tighter contest.

Similarly, P-Marq’s exit poll suggests a competitive race. It predicts the BJP could win between 150 and 175 seats, while the TMC may secure around 118 to 138 seats.

In contrast, Axis My India chose not to release its findings for West Bengal. The agency cited insufficient data, stating that a significant number of respondents declined to participate, making it difficult to generate reliable projections.

Looking Back at 2021 Results

In the previous Assembly elections held in 2021, the Trinamool Congress had registered a decisive victory, winning 215 out of 294 seats. The Bharatiya Janata Party emerged as the principal opposition with 77 seats, while the Congress and Left parties failed to open their accounts.

Counting Date and Timing

The official counting of votes for the 2026 Assembly elections is scheduled for May 4. Counting will begin at 8 am, with trends expected to emerge early in the day and clearer results likely as the counting progresses.

What It Means

While most exit polls indicate an advantage for the BJP, the wide range in projections suggests that the final outcome could still hold surprises. The results on May 4 will determine whether West Bengal sees a shift in power or a continuation of TMC’s rule.
