Royal Challengers Bengaluru’s IPL 2026 title celebrations were slightly overshadowed on Monday after star batter Tim David was fined 50 per cent of his match fee and handed a one-match suspension for breaching the IPL Code of Conduct during the tournament final against Gujarat Titans.

The disciplinary action came just a day after RCB secured their second IPL title with a victory over Gujarat Titans at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad.

According to an official IPL statement, David was found guilty of committing a Level 1 offence under Article 2.9 of the IPL’s Code of Conduct for Players and Team Officials. The article relates to throwing a ball or any piece of cricket equipment at or near a player, team official, umpire, match referee or any other individual in an inappropriate or dangerous manner during a match.

What Happened During the IPL 2026 Final?

The incident occurred during the 10th over of the first innings. Following the fall of a wicket, David reportedly threw an ice bag aggressively in the direction of on-field umpire Nitin Menon.

After reviewing the incident, match referee Javagal Srinath imposed a penalty that included a fine of 50 per cent of David’s match fee and the addition of two demerit points to his disciplinary record.

The Australian all-rounder admitted to the offence and accepted the sanction without contest.

Tim David Accumulates Five Demerit Points

The latest breach was David’s third Level 1 offence during the IPL 2026 season.

His first offence came in Match 20, resulting in one demerit point, while a second offence in Match 54 earned him two additional demerit points. The latest violation added another two points, taking his total tally to five demerit points.

Under IPL regulations, the accumulation of five demerit points automatically triggers a one-match suspension.

“This was David’s third Level 1 offence of the season, having committed his first offence in Match 20 (one demerit point) and his second offence in Match 54 (two demerit points). He has now accumulated five demerit points, which result in a one-game suspension. Accordingly, he will be suspended for RCB’s first game of the next IPL season or the first game of the franchise he represents in IPL 2027,” the IPL said in its statement.

As a result, David will miss the opening match of IPL 2027, whether he continues with Royal Challengers Bengaluru or joins another franchise during the next auction cycle.

Strong IPL Season Despite Disciplinary Setback

The suspension comes despite what has otherwise been a highly successful season for the powerful Australian batter.

Representing defending champions RCB, David played a crucial role in the middle order throughout IPL 2026. In 13 innings, he scored 277 runs at an average of 39.57 and an impressive strike rate of more than 197.

His campaign included one half-century, with an unbeaten 70 serving as his highest score of the season. David’s finishing ability and aggressive batting were key factors in Bengaluru’s successful title defence.

Australia Eye Bigger Role for Tim David

Away from the IPL, David’s future with the Australian national team continues to generate discussion.

Australia head coach Andrew McDonald recently suggested that David could potentially play the role of a finisher at number seven during the 2027 ODI World Cup, despite the batter not currently making himself available for regular ODI selection.

Since switching allegiance from Singapore to Australia, David has established himself as one of the most destructive T20 batters in world cricket.

The Singapore-born cricketer has represented Australia in 57 T20 Internationals, scoring 1,044 runs at an average of 30.70 and a remarkable strike rate of 174.00. His record includes one century, five half-centuries and a career-best score of 102 not out.

However, his ODI experience remains limited. Ahead of the 2023 ODI World Cup in India, David played just four One-Day Internationals for Australia, scoring 45 runs in four innings, with a highest score of 35.

Despite the limited opportunities in the 50-over format, Australia’s team management continues to view David as a potential game-changing finisher capable of influencing major ICC tournaments.
