Indian travellers are finding it easier than ever to make payments abroad, thanks to the growing global acceptance of the Unified Payments Interface (UPI). With Cambodia recently joining the network, Indians can now use UPI-enabled apps in nine countries, reducing the need to carry large amounts of cash or rely heavily on international cards.

The latest addition is Cambodia, where a cross-border QR payment linkage now allows Indian visitors to pay directly through UPI apps by scanning local QR codes. The facility is available at millions of merchant locations across the country, making transactions quick and convenient.

Singapore was among the first countries to integrate with India’s digital payment ecosystem through the UPI-PayNow linkage. This partnership enables seamless cross-border transfers and payments, benefiting both tourists and the large Indian community living there.

The United Arab Emirates has also embraced UPI, allowing Indian travellers to make cashless payments at participating merchants in cities such as Dubai and Abu Dhabi. The system has become particularly useful for shopping, dining, and everyday expenses.

France made history by becoming the first European nation to accept UPI payments. Indian tourists visiting popular attractions and retail destinations can use their smartphones for payments, making travel more convenient.

Bhutan was the first country to adopt India’s UPI standards for QR-based payments. The integration has simplified transactions for Indian visitors travelling across the Himalayan kingdom.

In Nepal, UPI acceptance has strengthened financial connectivity between the two neighbouring nations. Indian tourists can use UPI-enabled apps at participating stores, hotels, and businesses without worrying about carrying excessive cash.

Mauritius has also integrated UPI into its growing digital payments ecosystem, providing a familiar payment experience for Indian tourists and business travellers visiting the island nation.

Qatar is another destination where Indian visitors can make payments using UPI. With a significant Indian expatriate population and expanding digital infrastructure, UPI offers a hassle-free payment option across the country.

The ninth country on the list is Sri Lanka, where UPI services have been introduced to facilitate easier digital payments for Indian travellers and businesses.

As UPI continues its international expansion, Indian tourists can enjoy greater convenience, faster transactions, and reduced dependence on foreign currency exchange while travelling abroad.
