Pakistan Army Chief General Asim Munir is expected to visit Tehran amid rising diplomatic efforts linked to indirect US-Iran negotiations

May 21, 2026: Pakistan Army Chief General Asim Munir is expected to arrive in Tehran on Thursday as diplomatic activity intensifies around ongoing indirect negotiations between Iran and the United States. The visit comes at a sensitive time for the region following the recent U.S.-Israel military strikes on Iran and growing concerns over security tensions across the Gulf. Iranian media reports suggested the visit could play an important role in ongoing regional diplomacy.

According to Iranian outlet ISNA, Munir’s trip follows recent engagements by senior Pakistani officials aimed at facilitating communication between Tehran and Washington. Pakistani Interior Minister Syed Mohsen Naqvi had earlier visited Tehran twice this week and reportedly held discussions with Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian and other senior leaders on regional security and the status of indirect talks with the United States. Iranian authorities acknowledged that messages from Washington had been conveyed through Pakistani intermediaries.

The diplomatic developments are unfolding amid concerns over the Strait of Hormuz, one of the world’s most critical energy routes handling nearly 20 per cent of global oil and gas shipments. Continued tensions around the strait have raised fears of wider economic disruption. Meanwhile, former U.S. President Donald Trump reportedly warned that the negotiations were reaching a critical stage, while White House official Stephen Miller stated that Iran would have to accept terms satisfactory to Washington or face serious military consequences. Against this backdrop, Munir’s Tehran visit is being closely watched as a possible effort to prevent further escalation in the Middle East.
