Saudi Arabian authorities have issued an urgent weather advisory as a powerful system of thunderstorms and unstable conditions is set to batter most regions of the Kingdom until Friday, May 8, 2026. The General Directorate of Civil Defence has urged residents to exercise extreme caution, stay away from flood-prone valleys, and avoid areas where water accumulates to ensure public safety during the peak of the storms.
Regional Impact: Flash Floods and Dust Storms
The Mecca region is bracing for moderate to heavy rainfall that could trigger sudden flash floods, accompanied by hail and intense downbursts. Areas such as Taif, Turbah, and Al Khurma are expected to see significant dust and sand visibility issues. Meanwhile, the Riyadh region, including Wadi Al Dawasir and Afif, is forecast to experience light to moderate rain, with a high risk of dust-raising winds that could severely hamper road travel.
National Outlook: Wind Speeds and Maritime Safety
According to the National Centre of Meteorology, active downdraft winds are expected to reach speeds of 60 km/h or more, significantly reducing visibility across the Qassim, Hail, Medina, and Tabuk regions. Northern border areas are also on high alert for heavy showers. Additionally, a warning has been issued for rough seas along the coastal regions; citizens and tourists have been advised to refrain from all marine activities and swimming until the weather stabilizes over the weekend.
Safety Instructions and Emergency Protocols
The Civil Defence has reiterated that residents should strictly adhere to safety instructions disseminated via official media and social platforms. With the risk of flash floods in low-lying areas being particularly high, motorists are advised against crossing valleys even if the water flow appears minimal. This weather system marks one of the most significant periods of instability this season, with the Eastern Province expected to see the lighter end of the showers while the rest of the Kingdom remains under high-alert status.
