The Government of India on Friday reiterated its strong commitment to bring back fugitive businessman Nirav Modi from the United Kingdom, with the Ministry of External Affairs confirming that it remains in continuous contact with British authorities as legal proceedings move forward.
Speaking at a regular media briefing, MEA spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal said that the extradition process is currently underway in courts in the United Kingdom and remains a priority for the Indian government.
Extradition Proceedings Ongoing In UK Courts
Jaiswal stated that India has been closely coordinating with the UK authorities regarding its extradition request against Nirav Modi, who is wanted in connection with a major financial fraud case in India.
“We have been in touch with the UK side on the extradition request. We understand that legal proceedings in this particular matter are currently underway,” Jaiswal said during the briefing.
He emphasised that the matter remains active within the British legal system and that India continues to monitor developments closely.
India Vows To Bring Back Economic Offenders
Reaffirming the government’s broader stance on tackling economic offenders, the MEA spokesperson underlined that India remains determined to ensure that individuals accused of financial crimes abroad are returned to face justice.
“The Government of India remains fully committed to ensuring that fugitives are brought back to India to face the law of the land,” he added.
Nirav Modi, a former high-profile jeweller, is one of India’s most prominent economic fugitives and has been facing extradition proceedings in the United Kingdom for several years.
