Why Experts Say Hair Transplants Should Be Performed by Doctors, Not Technicians

A growing debate in India’s hair restoration industry is raising concerns over who actually performs hair transplant procedures — qualified doctors or trained technicians. The discussion has gained attention as many clinics continue to rely on technicians for major parts of the surgery, while some experts insist that only licensed surgeons should handle every stage of the process.

Hair transplant surgery involves extracting healthy hair follicles from a donor area and implanting them into thinning or bald regions. Since every graft is living tissue, experts say precision during extraction and implantation plays a major role in determining the final outcome.

According to industry estimates mentioned in the report, several clinics allow technicians to perform critical stages of the surgery after an initial consultation with the doctor. This model helps clinics conduct multiple procedures in a single day and increases operational efficiency. However, concerns remain about graft handling, survival rates, and the natural appearance of the transplanted hair.

Dr. Abhishek Pilani, Co-Founder of Assure Clinic and a member of the International Society of Hair Restoration Surgery (ISHRS), stated that even minor damage to grafts during extraction or implantation can permanently reduce the number of viable follicles. He noted that doctor-led procedures generally report higher graft survival rates compared to technician-managed surgeries.

The article also highlighted Assure Clinic’s “doctor-only” approach, where surgeons personally carry out extraction, slit creation, and implantation without delegating tasks to technicians. The clinic claims to use UHDHT (Ultra High Density Hair Transplant) technology designed to achieve denser graft placement than conventional FUE procedures.

Experts advise patients to ask clinics direct questions before undergoing surgery, including whether the doctor will perform the complete procedure, what the clinic’s graft survival rate is, and how much experience the operating surgeon has.

The report further stresses the importance of informed consent, arguing that patients deserve transparency regarding who will actually handle their grafts during surgery. While technician-assisted procedures remain common in the industry, many specialists believe patients should prioritise qualified medical supervision and verified clinical outcomes when choosing a clinic.
