Residents across Delhi-NCR were caught off guard as sudden rain and hailstorms swept through the region, bringing much-needed relief from the scorching heat. What started as a hot, humid day quickly transformed into a cool, windy evening, with dark clouds, strong gusts, and even hail creating a striking weather shift.
The sudden change didn’t just cool temperatures—it also sparked a wave of reactions online. Social media was flooded with memes and videos, with many users joking that parts of Noida, Gurugram, and nearby areas had started feeling like Shimla.
IMD issues alerts across the region
The India Meteorological Department (IMD) responded by issuing an orange alert for Delhi, Noida, and Ghaziabad, warning of thunderstorms and rainfall. Meanwhile, Gurugram and Faridabad were placed under a yellow alert, indicating moderate weather risks. In nearby Meerut, conditions were more intense, prompting a red alert due to continued storm activity.
Despite the rain, temperatures are expected to remain relatively high, with maximum levels around 39°C and minimum near 25°C in Delhi.
Internet reacts: ‘Delhi became Shimla’
As soon as the weather shifted, social media platforms lit up with humorous takes. Users shared clips of hail falling, strong winds sweeping through streets, and people enjoying the sudden cool breeze. Many joked about how quickly Delhi’s weather changes, with posts comparing the capital to a hill station.
The phrase “Shimla ban gaya” quickly trended, capturing the mood of residents delighted by the unexpected break from the heat.
An unusual April for Delhi
This year’s April has been anything but typical for Delhi. The city recorded its wettest April in nearly two decades, receiving around 27.9 mm of rainfall so far. The last time rainfall levels were higher was back in 2008.
At the same time, Delhi also experienced relatively cooler conditions, with fewer heatwave days than usual. The shifting weather patterns also helped improve air quality, making this one of the cleanest Aprils in recent years.
