Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi said Iran alone will oversee the strategic waterway for the next month

June 28, 2026: Iran has announced that it will retain exclusive oversight of the Strait of Hormuz for the next 30 days, with Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi stating that no other country has authority over the strategic waterway during this period. Speaking during a visit to Iraq, Araghchi said Tehran would gradually restore the strait’s full operational capacity once remaining obstacles were cleared. He also briefed Iraqi officials on the recent conflict and developments related to the memorandum of understanding between Iran and the United States.

Araghchi stressed that the responsibility for managing the Strait of Hormuz rests solely with Iran and warned that any unilateral intervention by foreign countries would complicate efforts to fully reopen one of the world’s most important shipping routes. He maintained that Iran’s priority is to restore normal maritime operations while preserving its control over the passage.

Meanwhile, Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) issued a fresh warning to the United States, saying it is prepared to respond with greater force if the current ceasefire is violated. IRGC spokesperson Hossein Mohebi accused Washington of repeatedly failing to honour its commitments and described the US as an unreliable negotiating partner. He said Iran remains prepared for any escalation and warned that any future military action by the US would be met with a stronger response.
