The US President said Washington and Tehran are close to an agreement
June 7, 2026: US President Donald Trump has said that any future agreement with Iran will not result in the immediate release of Tehran’s frozen overseas assets, one of the key demands raised by the Iranian government during ongoing negotiations. The remarks come amid signs of progress in talks between Washington and Tehran, with Trump claiming that both sides are “very close” to reaching an agreement. Iran has long sought access to more than $100 billion in overseas assets that remain frozen under international restrictions.
Speaking in an interview, Trump said the United States would ensure that Iran’s uranium stockpiles are either destroyed on-site or removed from the country before being eliminated. He stressed that preventing Iran from obtaining nuclear weapons remains a central objective of the negotiations and indicated that any agreement would include strict measures regarding Tehran’s nuclear programme.
Trump also stated that American troops would remain in the Middle East until the mission is completed and expressed confidence that US forces in the region are not currently under immediate threat. Describing Iran’s current leadership as more rational than previous administrations, he suggested that a broader regional arrangement involving Lebanon is not necessary for a short-term agreement, signalling a focus on securing a direct deal between Washington and Tehran.
