Chronic stress is emerging as one of India’s most pressing public health concerns, with experts warning that its long-term effects extend far beyond mental well-being. Increasing levels of workplace pressure, academic competition and financial uncertainty are contributing to rising cases of stress-related illnesses among people of all age groups.

Health experts say prolonged stress can trigger serious physical conditions by keeping stress hormones such as cortisol and adrenaline elevated for long periods. Over time, this may increase the risk of high blood pressure, cardiovascular disease, diabetes, weakened immunity and metabolic disorders.

Mental health professionals argue that India’s healthcare system continues to focus largely on treating mental illnesses after they develop, while preventive mental healthcare receives far less attention. According to recent estimates, a significant number of people requiring mental health support are still unable to access appropriate treatment, particularly in rural areas.

The growing burden of stress is also affecting the country’s economy. Workplace stress contributes to reduced productivity, increased absenteeism and higher employee turnover, creating financial challenges for both organisations and the healthcare system.

Experts believe that addressing the problem requires a preventive approach. They recommend integrating stress screening into primary healthcare, expanding counselling services in schools and workplaces, training frontline health workers to identify early signs of mental distress, and improving access to tele-mental health services.

They also emphasise the need for greater government investment in mental healthcare, noting that early intervention can reduce the long-term burden of chronic diseases linked to stress.

As stress continues to affect millions of Indians, healthcare professionals say recognising it as a major public health issue and investing in preventive strategies will be essential for improving both physical and mental well-being across the country.
